Experience a Taste of Mississippi at City Grit

Celebrate Mississippi’s rich culinary heritage during a multi-course Taste of Mississippi dinner at City Grit on March 7th at 7:30pm. Prominent Mississippi Chefs, Derek Emerson and Chris Poplin will create a unique tasting menu featuring fresh, wild-caught Mississippi Seafood complemented with beer from Mississippi’s first brewery, Lazy Magnolia. Taste of Mississippi is open to the public and tickets can be purchased for $75 on City Grit’s website: http://citygritnyc.com/#MISS

Taste of Mississippi will feature delicious, sustainable Mississippi seafood and local favorites, including:

  • Oysters stuffed with Shrimp and Parmesan
  • Shrimp and Roasted Tomato Bisque with Crab Cakes
  • Crispy BBQ Oysters with Waldorf Salad Slaw and Warm Brie
  • Shaved Fennel and Red Onion Salad with Colossal Lump Crab and Satsuma Orange
  • Blackened Redfish with a Cajun Corn Maque Choux
  • Southern Peach Cobbler with an Orange Biscuit Crust and Chantilly Crème

In addition to Mississippi Seafood, Lazy Magnolia’s award-winning Southern Pecan Nut Brown Ale will be served.  Lazy Magnolia uses whole roasted pecans just like grain to provide a nutty characteristic and a delightful depth to the flavor profile. Founded in 2003, Lazy Magnolia has been crafting beer to complement the traditions and tastes of the south.

Chef Derek Emerson and Chef Chris Poplin are excited to bring a Taste of Mississippi to New Yorkers in a unique culinary setting like City Grit.  More than a supper club, City Grit offers a one-of-a-kind dining experience with tasting menus inspired by particular ingredients or specific themes, in this case, fresh, flavorful Mississippi Seafood.

Chef Derek Emerson is executive chef and owner of Walker’s Drive-In, a local favorite in Jackson, Mississippi that has received praise in local and national publications such as Southern Living. At Local 463, his most recent restaurant, Chef Emerson works closely with Mississippi farmers and purveyors to serve fresh, local products.  He is dedicated to showcasing the best ingredients that Mississippi has to offer and has been a James Beard Award semifinalist three years in a row for “Best Chef in the South.”

“We are thrilled to be a part of Taste of Mississippi,” says Chef Derek Emerson.  “Taste of Mississippi offers an amazing opportunity to showcase our locally sourced seafood to diners in a fun, dynamic space like City Grit.”

Originally from San Diego, Chef Chris Poplin has been honing his culinary skills around the country with stints in Southern California, Las Vegas and Louisiana where he learned the art of Southern and Cajun cuisine at Coushatta Casino Resort.  In 2012, Chef Poplin was invited to cook at the Summer Olympics in a series of events that celebrated the food and culture of the Gulf Coast. Today, he is the executive chef at IP Casino Resort Spa in Biloxi, Mississippi, where he brings a fresh and exciting twist to southern cuisine.

“We’re excited to bring the flavors of Mississippi to New York,” says Chef Chris Poplin.  “Our tasting menu was inspired by classic southern cuisine and the abundant fresh seafood available to us in Mississippi.  We hope diners come out to taste what makes Mississippi Seafood so special.”
